Dear Friends,
Perhaps you’ve noticed that we took a short break from publishing the “Elevate Your Game” e-Newsletter and are wondering why? Well, the answer is that we have been gearing up for the October 2010 release of my forthcoming book, Black Faces in White Places: 10 Game-Changing Strategies to Achieve Success and Find Greatness, co-written by Dr. Jeffrey Robinson with Philana Patterson! This will be the long anticipated release of a project I have worked tirelessly on for the past five years!
Some of you reading this e-Newsletter may know, first-hand, exactly what it means to be a “Black face in a white place,” or a “minority,” while others may have indirect experience with these dynamics. My goal for each e-Newsletter is to offer something for everyone – regardless of their background – that will (hopefully) enlighten and expand their horizons. While this is my first book geared toward African Americans and people of color, the 10 game-changing strategies found in Black Faces in White Places are universally applicable to all.
Over the next seven months, as we countdown to the book’s public release and the launch of our national book tour, each e-Newsletter will highlight content and other related topics that honor the mission and the message of Black Faces in White Places. This will include brief portraits of milestone moments in Black history corresponding to each month. Here, in the seventh month leading to the book’s release, we pay tribute to the seven million slaves brought to the New World from Africa against their will. Each month, we will also profile individuals from among the dozens of interviewees for the book, which include Angela Glover-Blackwell, Roland Martin, Majora Carter, Cory Booker, Benjamin Jealous, Deborah Elam, Kevin Powell, Dr. Cheryl Dorsey, Jeff Johnson, Dr. Treena Arinzeh, and Don Thompson. This month we profile actor, author, and activist, Hill Harper.
I hope you enjoy this month’s installment and also share my excitement as we countdown to October 2010 when Black Faces in White Places will finally hit bookstores across the country and on the Internet!
Peace and blessings,
Randal

From Chain Links to Cufflinks

Some historians estimate that 6 to 7 million healthy men and women were snatched out of Africa and brought into the New World as slaves during the 18th century alone, stripping the continent of its most valuable resource. Through wretched conditions, physical, mental and spiritual abuse and countless losses--generations of slaves learned, lived, loved, procreated and survived anyway. Whether we are celebrating the resilience of our ancestors or our own successes, there's no denying the innate, selfless benevolence that lies within us, as illustrated by the dogged determination of a woman like Harriet Tubman. She chose to not only free herself, but she provided a hand up and out to other slaves by paving a new path that led to freedom--a path different from the usual paths of restraint forced upon people of color during slavery. It is estimated that the Underground Railroad resulted in the freedom of anywhere between 40,000 and 100,000 African Americans. Now that's reshaping America and leaving a legacy from which we continue to benefit today! How are you reshaping your world to help others? |

It is not only about shattering the old “glass ceiling,” but also about reconsidering the four dimensions of the black experience: identity, society, meritocracy, and opportunity.
