Dear Friends,
At BCT Partners, we often ask ourselves: what are we doing to exemplify the goals and values that we've set forth for our company? Are we creating excellent customer service? Are we actively seeking new development projects? Are we strengthening relationships with current clients? And what about our internal stakeholders, our team, are we connected with them?
In these trying times and in the midst of this troubled economy, it's easy to understand why some of us as entrepreneurs lose sight of the foundation that we may have built our businesses on: a spirit of independence, a need to make a difference in the world and an urge to use creativity and innovation to develop business on our own terms. Some of us may become so focused on selling our business that we might begin to cut corners by failing to return critical phone calls, listen to employee concerns or touch bases with valued customers.
This month, I'm challenging my entrepreneurs to focus on the foundations of their companies and remember why they became business owners in the first place. Reread the values, principles and mission statements that are the cornerstones of your business. Keep your team happy and your business running like a well-oiled machine. Practice the art of looking forward to the challenges that we all are facing in these tough times and continue to seek the opportunities in those challenges.

RUTGERS UNIVERSITY: Jersey Roots, Global Reach
Dr. Randal Pinkett is a proud graduate of Rutgers University in New Jersey, where he most notably became the first and only African-American in the school’s history to be named a Rhodes Scholar, all while captain of the Varsity Men's Track and Field team, competing as a high jumper and long jumper, and president of the Rutgers chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers.

Before I started my company, BCT Partners, in 2001, I had already developed three successful companies. In fact, I've spent little time in corporate America since graduation, but enough time to understand the transition from employee to employer.
